Zeina is an Egyptian, born and raised in the US. She grew up very proud of her Egyptian identity and culture, with Egyptian food, music, and television as a staple for her growing up. Although there were many celebrated traditions, she was also raised in a household that did not openly speak about mental health or its importance. There was a traditional mindset and deep culture gap involving mental health as a concept.

        This began to change, however, when Zeina began experiencing mental health struggles herself, which impacted various aspects of her life and that of those close to her. It was hard to accept help, especially when there were not many providers in Zeina’s area who shared and understood her culture, but she was lucky enough to have access to care. Slowly but surely, her family's perspective on mental health shifted.

        Zeina’s story proves that despite growing up with a certain outlook on mental health, it is possible to grow to appreciate the importance of advocacy. Joining AAMHA is a chance for Zeina to advocate for and inspire those around her to speak more openly about mental health and to advocate for those whose voices aren't being heard.
