George Habeeb
Psychotherapist, LMSW
I provide therapy to individuals and couples struggling with their sense of self, depression, addiction, sexual and relational challenges, and trauma. I come to therapy from a background in the arts and in advocating for people impacted by the criminal legal system. My experiences have taught me to listen without judgment and to remain open to the possibility that no question can be reduced to a single answer.
I practice psychotherapy with a curiosity towards the overlooked moments that unconsciously structure everyday life. When explored, these ordinary moments become sites of intrigue where distinctions of self and other; known and unknown; and past and present become unbound. My practice aims to cast light while respecting the darkness affixed to fantasies, desires, and fears. Above all, I believe nothing is determined and I respect patient agency.
My training in clinical social work and my experiences in outpatient community clinics in New York City have helped me to consider dynamics of power and exclusion in mental health contexts. I find the language we use to describe these dynamics, which at times might feel both empowering and alienating, can be a subject of clinical sessions and provide fertile ground for personal transformation. In the unfolding of the clinical relationship, patient and therapist can work together to recognize and disentangle their involvement in and upkeep of oppressive structures.
