Motaz Alshami

Psychiatrist, Psychotherapist

I am a psychiatrist who trained in the United Arab Emirates before moving to the United States. I was motivated to make the move because of my interest in learning psychotherapy, which can help when the medications fail. I finally found my home in Chicago where I continue to practice psychiatry and learn psychoanalysis at the Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute.

Throughout my career I provided comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and treatment for adults facing a wide range of emotional and psychological difficulties. I work with patients experiencing depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, patients struggling with susbstance use, trauma and stress-related conditions, obsessive–compulsive disorder, attention and concentration difficulties, and challenges related to identity, relationships, and life transitions. I have worked with individuals with long-standing personality patterns that contribute to recurring interpersonal conflict or difficulties managing intense emotions. People who have had a brief short-lived response to therapy in the past tend to find my approach helpful. In my practice, I approach every patient as an individual and tailor the treatment to them. I integrate a judicious use of psychiatric medications with psychotherapeutic approaches tailored to each patient’s needs.

I hope you will find in me an ally on your mental health journey who pays close attention to the unconscious thoughts, feelings and patterns that can facilitate or hinder your treatment. I hope to provide you with diagnostic clarity, ongoing medication management when indicated, and psychotherapy grounded in psychoanalytic and psychodynamic principles.

Write me an email or leave me a message so we can discuss what feels right for you or contact me through the website to book an appointment.
