Living in America with only her close family members and surrounded by a culture so different from her own, Sarah constantly felt disconnected. A country so unlike her family's, their beliefs and culture. She needed to develop habits that would allow her to maintain a two-sided perspective and merge her Arab American identity. In 2017, what was intended to be another brief visit home became a long, enervated two-year stay. Despite the rich Iraqi culture, beautiful people, historical sites, and available pastimes, she and her siblings rarely witnessed any of it as most of their days were spent secluded inside. This caused her to develop persistent feelings of anger, anxiety, and isolation that she kept to herself until college. Therefore, she decided to join the AAMHA as it provides an open, supportive, and helpful community for those of similar backgrounds and challenges. She hopes to contribute to the AAMHA by bringing awareness to this topic and offering beneficial resources and advocacy to improve the mental health services within our community.
